Polish mine explosion kills 8

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Methane gas was blamed for the explosion deaths of 8 miners in southern Polish‘s Halemba coal mine Tuesday, November 21. Officials say at least 15 are missing.

Rescue efforts were halted because dangerously high levels of methane gas returned, according to Zbigniew Madej, spokesman for state-owned Coal Co., which operates the mine.

The missing miners’ locater devices were not emitting signals, increasing rescurers’ concerns for their well-being. Grzegorz Pawlaszek, head of Coal Co., said the 15 missing miners’ fate is “not known,” but added that “there is a chance to find someone still alive.”

“This is a tragedy. People have died here,” Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said when he came to Ruda Slaska to see the blast.

Earlier Wednesday, a reconnaissance rescue team descended 3000 feet toward the blast scene, only to retreat because of safety concerns related to high methane gas levels. Rescue digging efforts were also halted because of explosion concerns.

The missing men were aged 21-59. One of the miner’s family members, Andrzej Pytlik, 30, remained on scene with his sister, hoping and waiting for news of her husband, Krystian Gaszka.

Pytlik, also a miner, said through teary eyes that, “I work in the mines and I know that hope is scant because that’s the truth.”

The explosion occurred in a closed portion of the mine where the now-missing miners were working to retrieve abandoned equipment. According to Pawlaszek, the value of the equipment was $23 million, adding that “It was new equipment and that is why we decided to retrieve it.”

He indicated that the recovery work was performed under the supervision of gas detection specialists, and that the bodies of the recovered miners were difficult to identify because of the severity of burns and because their ID tags were blown away in the explosion.

The Halemba mine, located in Ruda Slaska, has produced coal for nearly 50 years, has been fraught with safety concerns and has a track record of serious accidents. One of the oldest mines in Poland, it is centrally located in the industrial Silesia region.

Earlier this year, a miner was trapped underground in the Halemba mine five days after a cave-in. In 1990, 19 miners were killed and 20 hurt in a gas explosion, and five were killed in collapse in 1991.

Inside, priests and mining officials were comforting and counseling with distraught relatives. Outside, eight white candles flickered on a main gate wall.

Wikinews interviews spokesman for Greek far-left party Xekinima

Monday, May 3, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald today interviewed Petros Tzomakas, a Greek far-left activist and member of Xekinima, which is the Greek division of the Committee for a Workers’ International. The party is a member of Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA).

Tzomakas also sits on his local 5th Athens Municipal District committee, which is a joint effort by left-wing parties including SYRIZA, the Anticapitalist Left Cooperation for the Overthrow and a number of other political parties to oppose austerity measures proposed by the government. All left-wing parties in the country except the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) are involved. Tzomakas explained that the KKE prefers not to co-operate with other radical left-wing groups.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

4 Things To Look For In Mice Treatment Service Providers

byadmin

When mice infest a home, the homeowner should immediately call an exterminator. Mice can damage a home’s structure, and their droppings can transmit diseases. Homeowners should not choose just anyone to handle a mouse infestation; they should choose a qualified, licensed professional. Below are things for customers to consider before choosing an exterminator for Mice Treatment.

Look for Licensing

To properly diagnose and treat a rodent infestation inside a home, the exterminator should be licensed. State licensing lets the customer know that the technician has the skills necessary to control mice, and that they have learned about extermination. Bonding is important as well, as it protects the customer and the contractor from costs associated with damage done during the treatment process.

Ask for References

Before allowing the exterminator to set foot in the home, the customer should ask for a list of past customers. If possible, call each of these clients and ask for their opinions of the company. Did the technician get rid of the mice, and if not, were they willing and able to stick with the job until completion? Customers should ask questions so they know what to expect.

Look for an Action Plan

Once a customer chooses an exterminator, they should discuss which actions will be taken to get rid of the mice in the home. Some companies have preferred methods with which they eliminate mice; homeowners should ensure that they are comfortable with the techniques and they know what is involved. By discussing the plan with the exterminator, the customer can determine whether they are trustworthy enough to handle the job.

Levels of Service

Every home is different, and every rodent infestation has unique factors. Customers should choose an exterminator who offers different Mice Treatment service packages to meet a homeowner’s specific needs. While some homes may have minor infestations, others may have more severe problems that require a labor-intensive approach. By finding an exterminator like Bowman Termite & Pest Management LLC who can tailor their approach to the situation and the budget, a homeowner can ensure that they only pay for the services they need. You can connect with them on Facebook for more updates!

Odense SC win Danish squash championship

Friday, May 2, 2008

Odense Squash Club (OSC) won the Danish team club championship in squash. During the weekend of April 26 and 27, the final four of the Danish championship were played at OSC home stadium, Squash Center Danmark, due to OSC winning the league system this season. OSC beat Herlev/Hjorten Squash (Herlev) 6-1 in the final.

OSC was the favourite to take the gold this weekend, as they had already won league play with a comfortable lead over København Squash Klub (KSK), and therefore had home court and could pick their opponent in the first semi-final. OSC chose to play Åbyhøj Squash Klub (ÅSK) in the first semi final, and beat them with ease 6-1, only loosing the women’s second to Ditte Nielsen (ÅSK).

During the other semi, the favoured professionals from KSK, ran in to serious problems, as injured star player Alex Stait was not able to play for KSK giving the young Herlev team a chance in this semi. After 5 matches and down by two matches, Mikkel Kragholm (Herlev) and Thomas Pilak (Herlev) became double match winners when they each beat their opponents by 3-0 and 3-1, winning the match 4-3 for Herlev.

The final was, however, dominated by OSC, and Herlev wasn’t ever in the match. Only Danish individual champion Morten Sørensen was able to win for Herlev. Herlev lost the rest of the matches. OSC’s players proved to be to strong for last years bronze winners from Herlev. OSC won the Danish championship 6-1 in the final at Squash Center Danmark in Odense.

Nigerian anti-corruption officials arrest former governor James Ibori

Friday, December 14, 2007

Nigerian police arrested former Delta State governor James Ibori Wednesday on charges of abuse of office, corruption, and money laundering.

According to a statement by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibori was picked up at a private residence in the Asokoro District of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja. Ibori was to be arraigned yesterday at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. He is facing a total of 103 charges.

James Ibori had been governor of Delta for the past eight years, until leaving office in May, 2007. Although he earned a modest US$25,000 per year as governor, he had reportedly accumulated more than $35 million in foreign accounts. Ibori’s UK assets have been frozen while the Metropolitan police investigate further. Should the money be deemed the proceeds of crime, it could be transferred back to the Nigerian government.

Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua was elected in May on a platform of battling corruption in the government. Since taking office, Yar’Adua has overseen the arrest of five other former governors on corruption offences. James Ibori had supported the president in his election bid.

Law enforcement officials and anti-corruption advocates in the UK and Nigeria have complained that the Nigerian attorney-general was interfering and slowing down investigations. The attorney-general, Michael Aondoakaa, has denied the allegations.

In a December, 2007 paper by the global corruption watchdog Transparency International, entitled Report on the Transparency International Global Corruption Barometer 2007, Nigeria was determined to have one of the highest rates of corruption, evaluated as a percentage of citizens reporting they paid a bribe to obtain a service.

Speed Up Your Device By Disabling Animations}

Submitted by: Rossy Guide

Disabling (or just reducing) animations can speed up almost any interface. Sure, the animations are pretty fast already, but waiting for them over and over each day can start to feel silly.

Windows:

The Windows desktop has long offered convenient options for disabling animations. These settings work across every version of Windows, from Windows XP to Windows 7 all the way up to Windows 8 and the Windows 10 Technical Preview.

To access the animation options, open the Control Panel, click System & Security, and click System. Click the “Advanced system settings” option in the sidebar. Click Settings under Performance and use the checkboxes here to control which animations Windows displays. Choosing “Adjust for best performance” is a quick way to disable all of them.

On a modern Windows system, these animations won’t really hurt your performance much – but they will make the system seem faster as menus snap into view and windows minimize and restore instantly. These options allow you to eliminate Windows 8’s Start screen animations, too.

Android:

Android’s hidden Developer Options menu allows you to dramatically accelerate the animations or disable them completely. We’ve covered this before, and the process is basically the same on both Android 4.x and Android 5.0.

You’ll need to enable the Developer Options menu. Open the Settings app, scroll down to the bottom, and tap About phone or About tablet. Locate the “Build number” field and tap it seven times. You’ll see a notification saying you’re now a developer.

Tap the back button and tap the Developer options item that’s now appeared near the bottom of the Settings menu. Activate the Developer options slider, scroll down, and modify the “Window animation scale”, “Transition animation scale” and “Animator duration scale” options. You can select “Animation off” to disable them or “Animation scale .5x” to make them twice as fast as normal.

iPhone & iPad:

Apple fielded a lot of user complaints for the speed of animations in iOS 7. They’ve speed them up since then, but there’s still a way to reduce the interface’s animations.

To do so, open the Settings app, tap General, and tap Accessibility. Tap the Reduce Motion option and activate the switch. This won’t eliminate the animations entirely, but it replaces the motion animations with a fade that feels cleaner and maybe faster.

Mac OS X:

The slowest animations on a Mac are the window minimize and restore animations. They can be controlled from the Dock’s preferences pane. To access it, click the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and click Dock.

There’s no option to disable this animation entirely, but you can choose the “Scale” animation instead of the default “Genie” animation. Scale feels a bit faster and less distracting than Genie, so you’ll have a faster experience the next time you minimize and restore an application.

Unfortunately, there aren’t yet many other options for disabling animations as of OS X Yosemite. There is an option for disabling the bounce animation when applications launch in the Dock pane, though.

Linux:

Linux desktop environment probably has its own options for controlling its various desktop animations, too. Controlling animations options that appear when windows open, close, minimize, or are restored.

Practically every graphical interface offers some option to reduce animations. Some operating systems offer more complete options than others -the Windows desktop and Android are particularly configurable but every operating system offers some. Across every graphical interface, eliminating, reducing, or just speeding up animations will make your interface feel faster.

Cilla Black funeral held in Liverpool

Friday, August 21, 2015

Stars from the world of showbusiness joined fans and mourners yesterday at the funeral of the popular entertainer Cilla Black. Her coffin was transported in a cortege in Liverpool where she grew up, with hundreds of people paying their respects. Some were holding memorabilia related to Black’s 50-year long career in entertainment, which included singing and presenting television programmes such as Blind Date.

Tom Williams, auxiliary bishop of Liverpool, conducted the Roman Catholic mass in St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Liverpool’s Woolton area. This is the same church that Black got married in 1969 to Bobby Willis, who died in 1999 after 30 years of marriage. Eulogies were delivered by Cliff Richard and Paul O’Grady together with poems read by two of Black’s sons. Further tributes were paid by Tom Jones, who flew in specially for the funeral.

After the service, Black was to be interred in a private ceremony, next to the graves of her parents at the Allerton cemetery. She died early this month, aged 72, after she fell at her home in Spain and suffered a stroke.

Greek police arrest four for attacking Thessaloniki mayor Yiannis Boutaris

Tuesday, May 22, 2018

Yesderday, Greek police charged four suspects for participating in mob violence against Thessaloniki’s city mayor Yiannis Boutaris. The 75-year-old mayor was attacked on Saturday at a commemoration of victims of the Pontic Genocide.

According to police, three suspects were male — aged from seventeen to twenty — of Greek nationality and the fourth suspect was a mid-30s Georgian of Greek origin. Boutaris was reportedly told by persons in the crowd to leave the annual commemoration for the victims killed in a massacre during World War I by Turks as well as during the Greek-Turkish war. The mob was then seen kicking the mayor and throwing stones and bottles. The mayor was taken off the scene by his asides. Boutaris was later hospitalised, reportedly sustaining head, leg, and back injuries.

Describing the mayor’s assailants as “far-right bullies”, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said they would “have to face the consequences”. Both ruling party Syriza as well as main opposition party New Democracy condemned the attack. Syriza called the violence a “fascist attempt to target and intimidate” Boutaris. New Democracy said officials should arrest the attackers “immediately”.

Boutaris, who was reportedly at the hospital overnight, said in remarks to the Greek Reporter news organization, “It was a nightmare[…] There were several people that attacked me. They were hitting me everywhere.” The mayor called it a “despicable attack”.

Boutaris has favoured multiculturalism, supporting the construction of a mosque in Thessaloniki, and construction of monuments in honour of Turkish leaders. Boutaris had also supported policies that were LGBT+-friendly.

The three adults arrested — all but the seventeen-year-old — are to be tried on Wednesday.
