Dove ad viewed more than 3 million times on YouTube

Saturday, November 4, 2006

An advertisement for Dove beauty products has been viewed by well over three million people, without ever being on television. A copywriter from Ogilvy Toronto, the advertising agency that created a spot named “evolution”, uploaded the advertisement to video sharing website YouTube.

While the official upload of the ad itself has been viewed 1,119,262 times, there are dozens of copies of the ad on YouTube, adding to a minimum of 3,059,546 views. The official copy of the video is the website’s 12th most viewed this month, 53rd of all time.

Unofficial uploads have each received high levels of viewership, with 449595, 445322, 207906, 201670, 195265, 116501, and 102634 plays.

The agency did not originally intend to upload the video to YouTube, only display it on the company’s homepage. Staff member Tim Piper uploaded it to his account on October 6, about a week before it first got media coverage on Good Morning America.

The ad begins with a woman walking into a photo shoot. From there, she is primped and plucked by hair and makeup artists, then tweaked on a Photoshop-like program. The photo-manipulation is then posted on a billboard for the fictional “Easel Foundation Makeup” brand. Two young, teenage girls walk past, glancing at the board. “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted” ends the ad in text, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is.”

The creative team for the ad included Tim Piper, Mike Kirkland, Janet Kestin, Nancy Vonk, directors T Piper (treatment and post production) and Yael Staav (live action) from Reginald Pike, Soho post production, Rogue editing, Vapor music, Gabor Jurina and Make-up: Diana Carreiro, and Reginald Pike.

The official French copy of the ad has only received 132 views, although it was only uploaded on November 2, 2006.

Rhinoplasty Makeover For The New Centruy

Rhinoplasty Makeover For The New Centruy

by

Dave Stringham

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery operation designed to improve the appearance of the nose. Breathing and sinus function can also be improved using nasal plastic surgery. The term rhinoplasty means to mold or shape the nose. Many Plastic Surgeons are skilled and experienced, and each nasal plastic surgery procedure is individualized to accomplish the goals set forth by the patient and physician. A rhinoplasty can include a full rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, reduction rhinoplasty and or tip rhinoplasty.

A nose is tailored to fit as best as possible with your face. A truly beautiful nose is in harmony with the rest of your face. This may require nasal plastic surgery to reduce or enhance the size and shape of the nose, including the width of the bony base, tip and nostrils. Nasal plastic surgery can correct birth defects or injury and help relieve some breathing problems. The exact appearance of the nose cannot be determined before surgery.

Some of the reasons that you may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty are, a nose that appears too large for your face, to remove a bump on your nose, to reduce a nose that appears too wide on front view, for a nasal tip that droops or plunges, to reduce a nasal tip that is thickened or enlarged, to reduce excessively wide nostrils, to straighten a nose that is off-center or crooked, to improve an injured nose, to improve anatomic nasal blockages and breathing.

The goal of surgery is to achieve a natural-looking nose as opposed to one that appears operated upon. Each nose is shaped to fit in with the distinctive features of the patient and their face. The shape of the nose should be improved, and importantly, the appearance of the entire face should be enhanced. Medical grade photographs will be taken to be analyzed in planning for surgery and to define the unique characteristics of your nose and face. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the steps involved in your individualized rhinoplasty with you. This discussion includes a disclosure of risks, benefits, imponderables and expected outcomes after surgery. When both parties agree on the operative plan, schedule surgery.

Patients usually go to the outpatient surgery center or hospital the morning of surgery. Immediately before surgery, medications are given to promote healing and to keep swelling and discoloration to a minimum. Following surgery, the average patient is able to be discharged to an appropriate recovery facility. Plastic Surgeons encourage patients traveling from far away to stay nearby for three to seven days following surgery. Plastic Surgeons generally prefer general anesthesia in which the patient receives sleeping medications supplemented by local anesthetics to fully relax them. In most cases, the length of time required to perform the operation is 1 to 3 hours. Additional time is required to properly prepare the patient and for a recovery room stay.

The surgical procedure is done through incisions inside and or under the nose. In general, scars are not visible. When work on the nasal tip is necessary, as in revision surgery, it is frequently helpful to expose the cartilages of the nose and repair them directly. Modern concepts in rhinoplasty include building up the nose to achieve an aesthetically pleasing form, rather than just breaking the bones and removing tissue. With plastic surgeon techniques, they reposition the nasal bones after incising and releasing their attachment, I do not actually break the bones, eliminating a lot of the discomfort, bruising, swelling and anxiety. Plastic Surgeons feel this technique allows for better control of the operation and makes recovery easier for most patients.

Massive blackouts hit Florida

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Massive blackouts occurred throughout the US state of Florida shortly after 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (18:00 UTC) on Tuesday afternoon. Out of the 4.4 million customers served by Florida Power & Light, Co. (FPL), about 680,000 residents were affected, with an additional two million-plus customers affected in other parts of the state. It is estimated that as many as four million customers throughout Florida were affected, with many different power companies losing control of their specific grids.

Power outages were reported as far south as the Florida Keys, on the original FPL grid, and as far north as Orlando and Daytona Beach, nearly 300 miles (483 km) away on the Progress Energy grid. Most of Miami-Dade and parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties suffered the worst outages.

FPL President Armando Olivera said that a disconnect switch failed at 1:08 p.m. at the automated substation west of Miami, and a piece of equipment that controls voltage caught fire about the same time. Neither failure by itself would have caused a widespread outage. The event at the utility’s Flagami substation consequently led to the rolling blackouts.

Originally the first failure was thought to have occurred at the utility’s nuclear plant at Turkey Point. It is still unclear how failure at this site spread, but with power turning off at the main Turkey Point location, which serves all of south Florida, FPL’s grid shut down as well. It contributed to a domino effect which ended up sapping energy from bordering grids all over Florida.

Police reported several people were stuck in the elevators of high-rise buildings in downtown Miami and several hospitals were running on backup power, although no injuries or fatalities have been reported. The blackouts caused major traffic jams and a few accidents, but the original outage was contained shortly after it occurred. All customers affected had power restored to them by 6:30 p.m. (23:30 UTC).

British Airways plans to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2050

Saturday, January 31, 2009

United Kingdom flag carrier British Airways (BA) has announced a plan to cut their net carbon dioxide emissions by 50% between now and 2050. The target was announced by airline head Willie Walsh speaking in Hyderabad upon the opening of a new route between London’s Heathrow Airport and the Indian city. This is the most ambitious such target set by an airline.

“Some people say that in economic times as desperately tough as these, we can afford to put climate change issues on one side. I could not disagree more. Halving net CO2 by 2050 is an extremely challenging target. But it is one I am sure we can achieve,” said Walsh.

“We will make progress through investment in cleaner aircraft, use of alternative fuels, more efficient flight routings and the spread of emissions trading from Europe to the whole world,” he explained.

“We have taken climate change issues very seriously for a long time. More than a decade ago, we became the first airline to publish fuel efficiency targets – and we have achieved an improvement since then of almost 30 per cent. […] We are the only airline to have experience of emissions trading, and we have helped fund research into lower-carbon aviation fuels. We are currently working closely with Rolls-Royce to develop alternative fuel opportunities.”

If successful, BA’s carbon dioxide emissions will lower from sixteen million tonnes in 2005 to eight million tonnes in 2050. Walsh also spoke of previous experience the airline had in the field, and noted that they “are currently working closely with Rolls-Royce to develop alternative fuel opportunities.”

Yagi Wifi Antenna: Yielding Maximum Gain

By Sean Goudeloc

Yagi Wifi Antenna is designed to accommodate long range connections. This antenna provides vast directionality and greater gain. Yielding maximum gain shall give you a remarkable wifi experience. To attain this much, you need to take into considerations the different configurations and measurement of the materials to be used in constructing your own Yagi Wifi Antenna.

Reflector Spacing

Using a single reflector model, a spacing of 0.2 ? at the rear side of the dipole yielded the greatest gain, which measured about 2.6 decibels. But when compared with a multiple reflector model, which uses three reflecting elements, results tends to be higher. At different distances and lengths of the reflector yielded an additional gain of 0.75 ?.

Different Equal Length of the Directors

The main variable measured in here is the length of the directors which may also correspond to the length of the overall Yagi Wifi Antenna. Results of investigation discovered that a length of 0.382 ?, 0.411 ? and 0.424 ? shall yield maximum gain. Moreover, it was found out that fairly short directors at a spacing of 0.3 ? can increase the gain up to its ceiling of 14.5 decibels, provided that the antenna was lengthen into an approximate measurement of 10 ?.

Different diameters and lengths of directors

Investigations from the National Bureau of Standards concluded that the greater the diameter of the elements of the Yagi Wifi Antenna, the greater the gain that it will produce, given that it has shorter length. In contrast to that, smaller diameter elements will only yield maximum gain if its length is larger.

Spacing and stacking of Yagi Antenna

It has been proven that when antennas are piled up above the other or in broadside, additional gain will be attained. Correspondingly, as the gain increases, the beamwidth of the Yagi Wifi Antenna narrows. In the sense of the spacing in between elements, the closer the spacing is (approximately 0.8 ?), the more the gain to be received from the antenna is reduced for the reason that the mutual impedance increases. Furthermore, the gain can be increased to a maximum level of 2.5 decibels once the spacing in between elements is widened to approximately 1.6 ?.

The concept of stacking denotes assembling of the antennae. An amalgamation of four 0.8 ? yagi antennae yielded a gain of 14.2 decibels. Whereas, a combination of four 4.2 ? yagi wifi antennae produced a gain of 19.6 decibels.

Measured radiation patterns

a. Simplest Yagi Array

The simplest yagi array is comprised of just both the reflector and the driven element. The measures of its beamwidth is 660 and 1110 for the E and H planes, with a radiation of 3 dB.

b. 3-element 0.4 ? antenna

The 3 element yagi antenna is composed of a reflector, a driven element and a single director. Its bandwidth measures 570 and 720 for its E and H planes. The front to side ratio has a radiation level of 24 decibels and 8 decibels for the front to back ratio.

c. 5-element 0.8 ? antenna

The 5 element yagi antenna has a single reflector, one driven element and two directors. Its measured beamwidth is about 480 and 560. The radiation from front to side is basically the same with that of the 3 elements, while the radiation from front to rear is significantly higher than that of the 3 element yagi antenna.

As mentioned earlier, the beamwidth of the antenna is inversely proportionate with the gain. The greater the beamwidth, the lesser the gain. Several designs are to be discussed and their corresponding beamwidth.

Many infertile American women want sex selection

Friday, March 11, 2005Many infertile American women would choose the sex of their next child if given the option.

A survey of 561 women being treated for infertility has found that 41% would use sex selection if it were offered at no cost.

Contradicting fears that such sex selection would cause gender imbalance, the survey found that women with no children would choose baby girls and boys in approximately equal numbers.

Furthermore, women with only daughters wanted to select a male child while women with only sons wanted to select a female child.

“Sex selection is a topic that’s almost taboo for physicians to talk about,” says study lead author Tarun Jain of the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Prior to this study, there has been no data to indicate what the demand might be.”

Of 561 survey respondents, 229 would want to select the sex of their future child.

Among these, 45% had no children and 48% had children of all the same sex.

Half would choose to select the sex of their next child even if they had to bear the cost.

About 55% would choose sperm separation, 41% would choose preimplantation genetic diagnosis and 4% would choose neither.

Sex selection is controversial. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposes it for nonmedical reasons and so does the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine supports it for nonmedical reasons for family gender balancing provided methods used are safe and effective.

“As the techniques gain more popularity, physicians will have to decide if they will offer the procedure to patients with and without children,” says Jain.

The research is reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Breast Augmentation Using Implants

Cosmetic breast surgery is carried out using breast implants silicone gel implants and saline implants that are FDA approved. Silicone gel implants give a softer and more natural feel compared to saline implants. These implants can enhance the size and fullness of the breasts and also contribute a degree of lift where necessary. The surgeon would place these implants via an incision made either in the armpit, along the lower edge of the areola or in the crease line beneath the breast. This is an outpatient procedure that can be completed within two hours, though the duration may vary with individual patients and the technique employed.

Breast Enhancement Surgery via Fat Transfer

This is a new and more natural method of breast enhancement, which has already met with immense popularity. In this procedure, excess body fat present in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips and buttocks is harvested through minimally invasive liposuction process. The fat is purified and injected into the breasts to enhance the volume naturally. There is no question of rejection since the patient s own body fat is used.

US Nationwide Pollution Permit Restrictions Upheld

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

The US Army Corps of Engineers decision to place restrictions on issuance of nationwide pollution permits has been upheld by a federal court. In National Association of Home Builders v. Army Corps of Engineers, the District Court for the District of Columbia found that the Corps of Engineers had not acted in an “arbitrary” or “capricious” manner in changing the terms and conditions for issuance of a national pollution permit, including reducing the size of area into which pollutants may be discharged from 10 acres to 1 acre, raising the threshold for requiring additional permits from 1 acre to 1/10 acre,

A nationwide permit allows an organization to engage in certain industrial activities on a national basis (such as mining and construction), reducing the amount of paperwork and filings needed for otherwise minor environmental impacts, as opposed to an ordinary permit for a specific location which will engage in activities which generate water pollution.

Due to concerns over the amount of discharge taking place in waterways, the Corps of Engineers began in the 1980s to reduce the authority granted by nationwide permits and to bar use of the permits in certain ecologically sensitive areas.

Some industry groups, including the plaintiff in the above case, The National Association of Home Builders, sued the Corps of Engineers in 2000 over the change in an attempt to block its implementation. Environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, were given permission to intervene in the case in support of the actions of the Corps.

Environmental groups were pleased with the decision, but are concerned over other actions of the Bush Administration, such as the attempts to weaken provisions of the 2002 Clean Water Act to allow additional dumping of construction and mining waste into waterways as fill material.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

This exclusive interview features first-hand journalism by a Wikinews reporter. See the collaboration page for more details.
