Legendary Canadian football coach Frank Clair has died

Monday, April 4, 2005

Frank Clair, the Canadian Football League (CFL) coach and architect of the powerhouse Ottawa Rough Riders of the 1960s and 70s died Sunday at the age of 87 in Sarasota, Florida, United States.

Nicknamed “The Professor” for his skills at recognising talent, teaching the game, and ability to get the most from players, Clair first came to Canada to coach the Toronto Argonauts in 1950 and ended his first CFL year with a Grey Cup championship; repeating with the Argos in 1952. He left the Argonauts following a salary dispute and ended up in Ottawa in 1956 where he took on the daunting task of reviving the Rough Riders team which were poorly run and disorganised. He led the team to an incredible 14 consecutive seasons of playoff appearances and three Grey Cups.

He retired from coaching following the 1969 Grey Cup to take over the general manager position. At that time, Clair led the CFL in seasons coached (19), regular-season victories (147), playoff seasons (17), consecutive playoff seasons (14), playoff victories (22), Grey Cup appearances (six) and Grey Cup victories (five). His winning ways continued as GM when Ottawa won the 1973 and 1976 Grey Cups. Nevertheless, he was let go in 1978 and Ottawa has not won a Grey Cup since.

According to the Ottawa Sun, former sports editor Jane O’Hara described Clair as a no-nonsense, to-the-point, type of gentleman who was short on smiles, but always seen coaching his team wearing a snap-brim fedora and standing poker-faced and erect on the sidelines.

He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1981 as a builder and the Ottawa stadium (Frank Clair Stadium at Lansdowne Park) was renamed in his honour in 1993.

Selecting Day Care Furniture

Submitted by: Kris Starliper

Many people over look a certain aspect of running a day care center. Sure they might have the activities planned out, but what about the furniture? Selecting day care furniture is an important task. This task should not be taken lightly. The furniture in any room is significant, and it is particularly important that the proper furniture be used for children in a day care environment. Without the right day care furniture, children will be more likely to behave inappropriately, which will limit their education and wear on the nerves of the daycare center staff.

The first step in selecting day care furniture is to determine what pieces of furniture are necessary. Typically, a day care center will have tables and chairs, cribs, diaper changing stations, book stands, storage units, step stools, lockers, cubbies, and sinks.

Each of these elements is important, and the size and use by the day care will determine what grade of furniture needs to be selected. Common sense dictates that furniture that is used more should be of a higher quality and able to take a beating. The problem is that this type of furniture is often more expensive.

Selecting tables and chairs is one of the first tasks, because the children will spend a lot of time using these furniture pieces. Of course, it is critical to select furniture that is the size that children can use. Table height should be around 18 for children, whereas an adult table could be 30 high.

Because children s furniture is small, it is typically light; therefore it is not necessary that the tables or chairs have wheels in order to be able to move them around. If tables do have wheels, make sure these wheels can be locked so that the furniture is not sliding around.

While wheels are not necessary for tables and chairs, it is often helpful if cribs do have wheels. First of all, in case of a fire, cribs with wheels can often be wheeled directly out of the building. Additionally, cribs are often too large to be able to conveniently pick up by hand, and wheels on cribs give this element of day care furniture a nice degree of flexibility.

Diaper changing stations can either be stand-alone furniture or built in items. Built-in items are nice because they are typically very stable and can go nicely with the d cor of the room. In any case, diaper-changing stations should be located near a sink, or have a portable sink nearby, for convenience in cleaning and maintaining these stations. Additionally, a trash can should be located nearby.

While there are many things to consider when selecting day care furniture, the process can be fun and enjoyable. In the end, following these tips should help you get day care furniture that is comfortable for the children and staff, as well as durable and cost-efficient. Remember, one of the most important aspects of a day care is keeping the children entertained, safe, but also comfortable while they are staying there.

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.

UK study reveals smoking could shorten men’s lives by 10–15 years

Saturday, September 19, 2009

A study carried out in the United Kingdom revealed that the life expectancy for men could be reduced by 10–15 years after the age of 50 due to smoking.

The British Medical Journal carried out a study over a time period of 38 years in the United Kingdom which examined the health of 19,000 men aged 40–69. They were examined between 1967–1970. After tracing the history of the men, the survey revealed that smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol reduced the life expectancy of men by 10–15 years after they reached the age of 50. The research was published on the BMJ‘s website on Friday.

The researchers from the University of Oxford in England were focussing on smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol due to the fact that they are the main cardiovascular risk factors. Dr. Robert Clarke from the university said: “We’ve shown that men at age 50 who smoke, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can expect to survive to 74 years of age, while those who have none of these risk factors can expect to live until 83. It is precisely this kind of very prolonged follow-up study that is necessary to get these results — that modest differences in heart risk factors can accurately predict significant differences in life expectancy.”

“The results give people another way of looking at heart disease risk factors that can be understood more readily. If you stop smoking or take measures to deal with high blood pressure or body weight, it will translate into increased life expectancy.”

Friday, January 19, 2007

Tips For Keeping Your Home Safe And Secure

By Gabriel Adams

Our homes are a place in which many of us feel sale. While this is true for the most part, the safety and security of your home should always be on your mind. By implementing a few of the home safety and security tips outlined below, you are likely to protect yourself, your home, and your personal belongings from harm.

Perhaps, the best home security tip to implement is the locking of all doors. Even those who live in ‘safe,’ neighborhoods are encouraged to keep their doors locked, especially at night. In fact, did you know that your doors should be locked even when you are home? This is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your home from intruders.

In addition to door locks, window locks should also be examined. If an intruder is set on getting into your home, a window is a method of entry that they are likely to try. It is a good idea to install locks on all windows in your home; however, it is extremely important to do so on the first floor or with any easy accessible windows. With that being said, buying and installing window locks isn’t enough, as you need to be sure to use them to your advantage as a homeowner.

Another great home security tip involves keeping the entranceways to your home well lit. This includes any backdoors or secondary entrances. For the best sense of safety and security, outdoor motion lights should be used. If motion sensor lights are not an option, be sure to have all lights turned on if you will be returning home after dark. Also, make sure all outdoor light switches are easily accessible to you from both inside and outside of your home.

All homes should clearly be marked with the proper address. This is important, should you need to call on assistance from emergency response professionals. Use large, bright, and bold numbers to highlight your address on your mailbox alongside the road. In addition to a mailbox, a home should also be marked with the proper street address. This will assist with the easy response should someone in your home suffer a medical emergency or if you need to quickly report a break-in.

The above mentioned home security tips are ones that are easy and affordable to implement. However, it is also important to examine home security systems. Although home security systems can get costly, be on the lookout for any sales and discounts, as many reputable home security companies do offer them. In keeping with costs, it is important to look at home security systems as an investment, not just an average, everyday purchase. Should you ever find yourself in an emergency, a home security system can, literally, be a lifesaver.

As a reminder, even if you reside in an area that is deemed ‘safe,’ you can never be too careful. By keeping a close eye on the news, you can easily see that crimes and other emergencies can happen anywhere and at just about any point in time. That is why you should take steps to protect your home, making it safe and secure.
