Nelson Mandela charity official resigns over ‘blood diamonds’

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF) trustee Jeremy Ractliffe has resigned from the charity’s board, twelve days after admitting to the possession of “blood diamonds”.

Earlier this month, supermodel Naomi Campbell testified against former Liberian president Charles Taylor when she claimed she received “very small, dirty looking stones” from two men, allegedly associated with Taylor. Campbell said she gave these diamonds to Ractliffe to “do something good with” in 1997. He gave the diamonds to police the day after Campbell’s testimony. The police confirmed the stones were diamonds.

The board of the Mandela charity said in a statement, “Mr. Ractliffe regrets his omission to inform the chairperson, chief executive officer and the rest of the board of trustees of the NMCF of his receipt of the uncut diamonds until now… [Ractliffe] acknowledges that had he done so, he and the board would have found a better and lawful way to manage the situation.”

Ractliffe took the diamonds from Campbell, fearing she might be prosecuted for removing uncut diamonds from South Africa, illegal without a license.

Ractcliffe said, “Naomi suggested they could be of some benefit to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund — but I told her I would not involve the NMCF in anything that could possibly be illegal… In the end I decided I should just keep them.”

Taylor is on trial in The Hague, The Netherlands for allegedly trading diamonds for weapons to supply the Revolutionary United Front of Sierra Leone. Taylor faces eleven counts for international crimes including rape, sexual slavery, enlistment of children under the age of fifteen, and pillaging.

New industrial area to be created in Arad county, Romania

Wednesday, April 13, 2005The local government of Arad County in western Romania today launched a project calling for the creation of a new industrial area in the commune of Zimandul Nou. They have already allocated 0.3 km² for this project, with more land being expected to be allocated for the industrial precinct.

The president of Arad Couty Council, Iosif Matula, says that the labour force in the area is qualified in industrial occupations, especially in the fields of textiles, furniture, electronics and tools industries. The site also already has all the necessary infrastructure, such as gas, access to sewage and a water purifying facility.

The industrial area will be located on the outskirts of the Zimandul Nou commune, which is a fairly small, rural town. The proposed Zimandul Nou industrial area is one of the latest development projects by the Arad County Council, which has, since a few years ago, embarked on a fairly wide-ranging project of attracting foreign investment and developing further industry in rural areas.

The county capital, Arad, with a population of nearly 190,000, is one of Romania’s largest industrial centres and is a major centre for foreign investment, but the county council would like to see more industry heading to the rural areas. The Zimandul Nou precinct will be the eighth industrial zone in a formerly-rural area in the county. The other seven areas have already attracted combined foreign investments of over 120 million euro.

Public Speaking Don’t Speak Too Little

By Gilda Bonanno

One of the most common mistakes that speakers make is to go over their time limit. However, sometimes a speaker makes the opposite mistake, by not speaking long enough. A colleague recently sent me the following email describing her experience with a speaker who spoke too little.

“Hi, Gilda. I went to hear an author speak at a local independent bookstore. It wasn t a book signing it was a presentation. The author spoke for less than 10 minutes I d say about 7 minutes. Since it was a Saturday night and my husband and I had driven 20 minutes one way to see her, we were shocked. We expected much more something like a few minutes talking about her background and writing the book, then reading a chapter from the book, then a bit more about the topic of the book.”

Here are three things that you can do to ensure you’re not the speaker who shocks and annoys the audience by speaking too little:

1.Be clear about your time limit.

If you’re speaking at a meeting, event or conference, check with the organizer about how long you have to present. And check with the organizer again as the day approaches because things may have changed. Also check any marketing materials or invitations that were sent out to ensure that attendees’ expectations match your expectation of the time limit. In the above case, the speaker should have spoken longer or the event should have been advertised as “meet the author” only rather than as a “presentation by the author.”

2.Practice.

In order to know how long your presentation will take, you have to practice. And practice doesn’t mean sitting at your desk thinking about your presentation, looking at your notes or flipping through your slides. Practice means you say your presentation out loud, in as close to the real environment as possible. So if you’re going to give your presentation standing up at the front of the room, you should practice standing up at the front of a similar room, or ideally, the actual room that you will present in.

You are not trying to memorize your presentation word for word; your goals are to become comfortable with the content, be prepared to say it a few different ways and get a good idea of how long it will take.

3.Have extra material ready.

While it’s acceptable and even preferable to end a few minutes early, sometimes your presentation takes substantially less time than you practiced. This may happen because another speaker unexpectedly covered much of your content or the organizer reduced the scope of your presentation at the last minute. Whatever the reason, you should have extra content ready just in case. Have some good questions to ask, an additional exercise or handout, or a separate section of slides to use if needed.

When you’re trying to decide whether you should go to your extra material or just get done early, use the audience and the meeting organizer as your guides. Are the participants required to be in the meeting or conference session for a certain amount of time so they can get credit? Will they be shocked and annoyed if you end early? And if you decide to use your extra material, it shouldn’t be perceived as “fluff” or just filler material with no value.

If you follow these three tips, you won’t be the speaker who shocks and annoys the audience by speaking for substantially less time than expected. And you’ll be better prepared to meet the audience’s expectations of high-value content within the expected time frame

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Is A Minimalist Website Design Right For Your Company?

Submitted by: Jeremy Horwitz

Everyone has seen a site that features minimalist website design. These sites are often very simple and look extremely clean. If they are properly constructed they can be a powerful marketing and sales tool that can also be extremely cost effective for you to use as well. Here is a look at minimalist website design and factors that you should consider when determining whether or not it is right for your needs.

What minimalist website design focuses on

There are a few key areas that website development experts focus on in a minimalist website design. Unlike many sites that choose elements for their decorative ability only, a minimalist site demands that each element perform an important function as well. While it does not mean that a website design will avoid the use of images or graphics, their presence is there for a reason. One key example of a minimalist website development project that uses a lot of images is a site for a photographer. The site may be image heavy, but the pictures or graphics are there for a reason.

Affordability

If you need a site that is beautiful but affordable, you may want to think about a minimalist website design. Because they are so simple and usually do not take hours of complex programming their overall cost is much more reasonable than a flashy site may be. Keep in mind, however, that if you do want complex functionality built into your site it may have a higher price tag regardless of whether the design itself is clean and minimalist.

Remember that minimalistic website development does not mean that there are not complex functions built in it is just that they look clean, have a purpose and are used in such a way that they are as useful and relevant as possible.

Rapid Loading

One advantage of minimalist website design is the fact that a minimalist site will load quickly even if a person s internet speed is not high. Some sites that are not designed along minimalist lines will not load quickly or easily and this can be a distinct problem for many people. On the other hand, because a site is minimalist in its concept, there is not a lot to load in many cases and you may find that you do not need to worry about potential customers going elsewhere because their internet speed is not as high as possible.

If you have looked at each of these factors and have found that they will work for your company and its needs, you will be able to move ahead and get the minimalistic website design you have been looking for. It is important to remember that it is not so much what the site can do but how it looks that will determine whether or not a website design project could truly be termed minimalistic.

Just because your site looks simple is no reason to choose the first design company that comes along. Many aspects of minimalistic design can take a large amount of design skill and some website development companies may not be able to handle your project properly.

Nigerian parliament votes to make vice president acting president

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Goodluck Jonathan, vice-president of Nigeria, has become the country’s acting president after president Umaru Yar’Adua travelled to Saudi Arabia last November to receive medical treatment for a heart condition.

In a televised address, Jonathan commented, “I am fully aware of the responsibilities reposed in me, and I want to reassure all Nigerians that this is a sacred trust, which I shall discharge to my fullest abilities. […] The circumstances — in which I find myself assuming office today as acting president of our country — are uncommon, sober and reflective.”

He added, “[m]ore than ever therefore, I urge all Nigerians as a people who have faith in God to pray fervently for the full recovery of our dear president, and his early return”.Yesterday saw both houses of the Nigerian National Assembly approve a motion for Jonathan to become president until Yar’Adua is able to return. Under the country’s constitution, executive power can be transferred when parliament is formally informed by the president that he is absent. Yar’Adua apparently had not done so; however, senate leader David Mark said that Yar’Auda’s comments in an interview with the BBC last month were sufficient notice.

Some political analysts, however, have indicated the assembly’s move might not be legally binding, and could face a court challenge.

Evergreen Shrubs And Hedges Are Important, Cold Hardy Landscape Specimen Plants

By Pat Malcolm

Next to the landscape importance of trees is that of shrubs that grow in our gardens, parks, landscape foundation, street borders, and commercial landscapes. Thousands of different varieties of shrubs are grown to ornament lawns, yards, and borders, but only a few varieties are available to buy at your local nursery for planting, and growing. Many shrubs are selected and grown on a basis of intelligent buying of flowering hedges, evergreen cold hardiness, non-flowering hedges, berry shrubs, and deciduous shrubs. Many shrubs glow with brightly colored leaves in the fall and winter.

Evergreen shrubs often are planted to grow as a low ornamental hedge, such as: Juniper, Holly, Anise, Boxwood, Aucuba, Pittosporum, and Wax Myrtle. Large evergreen shrubs that, after many years of growing, are Arizona Cypress, Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis, Thuja orientalis; Bamboo, Eleagnus, American Holly, Italian Cypress, Several tall Juniper cultivars, Leyland Cypress, Podocarpus, and Wax Myrtle, Myrica Cerifera. Some large landscape evergreen shrubs are planted as specimen plants, Bamboo trees, Italian cypress, Philodendron, Philodendron selloum, Philodendron x ‘Xanadu’, and Podocarpus.

Although it is common for some shrub stems to die from shading out, they will be renewed by new shoots; and like trees, shrubs live for years and are considered a good property, longtime investment, and a permanent fixture in the landscape.

Usually planting shrubs as privacy hedges will mature to a point in four to five years, that the privacy screen will be vigorously solid and dense enough to hide whatever lies behind it.

Some flowering shrubs being to bloom in late winter, such as the fragrant Tea Olive, Azalea, Camellia, and Ligustrum followed by the Abelia, Banana Shrub, Hydrangea, Red Bottle Brush, Bridal wreath, and Yellow Rose of Texas. Most shrubs finish flowering by mid-summer, when flower buds are formed to bloom next year.

Some shrubs thrive in dry soils; others in wet soils, but most shrubs and hedges fall in-between and require well drained growing areas. All other possible growing extremes are important for planting shrubs, and hedges such as altitude, shade, wind exposure, and soil relative fertility levels. Azaleas, for instance, grow well underneath the shade of most trees, including Pine trees, and will decline fast and soon die, if planted to grow in full sun. Azaleas must have organic matter incorporated into the soil to thrive, and the proper acidity (pH) of the soil is necessary for azalea plants to live. Pine straw is often effective to keep azaleas weed free. Long lines of blooming azalea plants are often dramatic when plant underneath pine trees, when the azalea flowers being to display their expanding blooms. The shallow root system of azaleas require substantial watering during dry spells to insure plenty of azalea flowers, the spring season following summer droughts.

Small Evergreen Shrubs

Evergreen shrubs are an important choice to consider for planting, in order to insure green color presence during the gloomy days of winter. Many gardeners want an evergreen shrub as a hedge to maintain privacy when cold weather arrives. Anise, Illicium florianum grows into small hedges in resorts like Sea Island, Georgia, and exotic red flowers and liquorish aromas rise from the leaves in the summer. Acuba japonica variegata ‘Gold Dust’ is also called the Gold Dust plant. Acuba makes an interesting low growing shrub to plant and grow next to brick buildings. Cleyera, Ternstroemia gymanthera, is an interesting shrub for coastal areas, because Cleyera shrubs are very tolerant of salt water spray, and the waxy green leaves have a unique tropical appearance in the landscape. Boxwood, Buxus microphylla asiaticum, is also salt water tolerant with dense coloring throughout the zones 5 – 9. Boxwood is one of the most important and popular shrubs to buy in the U.S, notably as a neat, clean grower, Boxwood is not fast growing, thus requiring many years to reach 3 feet in height. Boxwood plants are commonly planted in rows along walkways. Larger boxwood plants work nicely in group plantings in front of buildings

Eleagnus, Eleagnus pungens, is one of the fastest growing shrubs and grows as a superb barrier hedge or privacy fence that can grow up to 10 feet tall. Eleagnus is salt water tolerant, and can be grown in containers at commercial locales. Interstate highway landscaping is filled with large groupings and plantings of Eleagnus, Eleagnus pungens, shrubs to minimize automobile fumes and truck highway noises.

Holly shrubs are distinctively varied, very adaptable, and versatile in the landscape. The most popular hollies are: Burford Holly, Ilex cornuta; Carissa Holly, Ilex cornuta ‘Carissa’; Dwarf Chinese Holly, Ilex cornuta; Dwarf Japanese Holly, Ilex crenata; Helleri Holly, Ilex crenata; Needlepoint Holly, Ilex cornuta ‘Needlepoint’; Sky Pencil Holly, Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’; Savannah Holly, Ilex x attenuata; Stokes Dwarf Holly, Ilex vomitoria ‘Stokes Dwarf’; Dwarf Yaupon Holly, Ilex vomitoria; Weeping Yaupon, Ilex vomitoria pendula.

Japanese Aralia, Fatsia japonica, is most commonly called Fatsia. In landscapes, Fatsia is often planted and grown in large groups near shaded house entrances or underneath shade trees for that bold tropical look. Fatsia can be planted as a large specimen plant, or containerized Fatsia will grow as the shrub as an indoor plant. Philodendron selloum is often used like Fatsia, and can grow into a large, attractive specimen plant on slender, woody-looking trunks (stems). The Philodendron hybrid, Xanadu, is also used like Japanese aralia, Fatsia, and Philodendron selloum, but largely is used as an indoor or outdoor container plant. The waxy, deeply-lobed green leaves are very cold hardy, and even if Philodendron is growing outside in Zone 5 – 10, it will come back to life from vigorous roots in the spring after freezing to the ground.

Pittosporum tobira can be grown as an outside plant or as a containerized shrub. Pittosporum plants displays bright green leaves year and grows best in shady areas of low light. The flowers are small, white, and very fragrant, like the aromatic crushed leaves. Florists use stems and leaves as fillers in floral arrangements. Pittosporum shrubs are not fast growing, but eventually can form an excellent privacy hedge to block out automobile noise and fume emissions. Because Pittosporum tobira shrubs are salt water tolerant, these shrubs are popularly used in landscaping at Sea Island, Georgia. Large specimens of Pittosporum tobira are used as evergreen small trees, that subtly present an exotic, tropical appearance. Pittosporium tobira ‘Variegata’ has variegated white and light green leaves with fragrant white flowers, blooming in the summer. The variegated leaf form of Pittosporum tobira is not burned by strong sunlight, like most variegated shrubs.

Large Evergreen Shrubs

Large evergreen shrubs sometimes grow into small eclectic trees after many years. These large evergreen shrubs provide the garden with specimen attractiveness, privacy, and evergreen, cold hardy color. Arizona Cypress is also called Carolina Sapphire, Cupressus glabra ‘Carolina Sapphire’, and is a fast growing evergreen, that can grow 20 – 30 feet with fine textured, silver-blue leaves. The leaves grow threadlike in very hot areas, and will survive well in droughts or under stress.

Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis, is an American native evergreen shrub that can grow almost anywhere in the U.S. The dark green leaves of Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis, can turn yellow, orange, or maroon during winter, but the green color is restored in Zones of cold hard tolerance, 2 – 8, in the spring. Other arborvitae species are: Emerald, Thuja occidentalis ‘Emerald’; Little Giant, Thuja occidentalis ‘Little Giant’; Little Golden Giant, Thuja occidentalis ‘Little Golden Giant’; Aurea Nana, Thuja occidentalis ‘Aurea Nana’;

Blue Italian Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’, will qualify as one of the most important specimen, evergreen trees used in landscapes. The trees are not fast growing, but are cold hardy in zones 7 – 11. The dense leaves are branched and grow into a large column, 3 -4 feet wide. Italian cypress can grow to 40 feet outside, and large container grown Italian cypress trees can be shipped quickly on semi-trucks, or by UPS. Italian Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’ can draw architectural attention to large buildings. Italian cypress trees are often planted at commercial banks, bordering large walkways or memorial gardens.

Leyland cypress, Cupressocyparis leylandii, is a fast growing shrub, that most often is planted as a privacy hedge, but in many cases can grow into a large Leyland cypress specimen tree that might reach 130 feet. The Leyland cypress shrub (tree) is a fast growing intergenetic hybrid. Erosion control can be obtained fast by planting these vigorous Leyland cypress shrubs to embed their roots rapidly into the soil and cool the earth.

Podocarpus macrophylla and Podocarpus nagi are the most commonly grown shrubs of Podocarpus. Shearing Podocarpus is a common plant practice to create a sculptured look. Podocarpus can be grown as a border plant for walkways, but after many years, grows into a 10 foot, small, evergreen tree. The salt water and cold hardy tolerance of Zone 7 – 10 makes Podocarpus a top choice to buy for any landscape garden.

Wax Myrtle or Bayberry, Myrica cerifera, grows normally as a native American plant in forests, but nursery grown plants will provide a fast growing screen that spreads by underground shoots. Birds and wildlife love this plant for nesting and to seek protective cover. The waxy, gray berries are fragrant and commonly are used to scent candles with a woody aroma. All parts of wax myrtle shrubs are fragrant and grow to block out noise and noxious automobile fumes. Very old wax myrtle plants grow into exotic looking small trees, that are aromatic specimens in the landscape. Wax myrtle shrubs, Myrica cerifera, are a commonly-grown naturalized plant that enthusiastically is used as a salt water and cold hardy tolerant hedge or landscape tree at the famous resort hotel at Sea Island, Georgia.

Google releases test of mapping service

Thursday, February 10, 2005Google Inc. on Tuesday rolled out a test version of its mapping service — a type of service long offered by its rivals Yahoo and Microsoft. The web site, http://maps.google.com, is designed to let users display maps of locations around the United States and Canada, find businesses near those locations, and generate driving directions between locations.

Unlike the competitors’ offerings, Google’s mapping system shows bigger maps and does not require a reload of the web page when a user pans or zooms the map. The site uses the Google Local search to incorporate local businesses onto the map. Google uses mapping data from TeleAtlas and Navteq, according to information shown on the mapping site.

Learn How To Fix Your Own Laptop To Save Yourself Bundles Of Cash

Submitted by: Jake Baydenz

Laptop computers are an appropriate way for us to get the needs of a computer in a portable machine. Laptops are becoming desktop replacements. It is rare that a family has more than a laptop instead of a desktop. However, they can become very expensive when they need to be repaired. The most excellent way to find the correct value of a service is do it all by yourself. But not everyone can do it all. Fixing a computer of any kind can be a very hard job for people with completely no technical knowledge on this field. However, there’s a saying that “if there’s a will there’s a way”.

The greatest fear for someone working on their laptops is that they afraid they might break it. These machines are very delicate and require the appropriate knowledge and guidance to to be able to succeed in fixing it. However, if you have patience, you can learn how to do this, you can save money and even earn some money with your new skill! How can I save money? Let’s face it, with all new programs and games coming out for computers hardware needs to be updated to keep up with everything.

This is where computers companies persuade you, because they make a new product and say it will allow new programs or games to run faster and better than before. The things they don’t tell you is that all they did was probably changing the processor, add some memory and put in a hard disk with more storage capacity. If you knew how to open up your own laptop and work with the parts within it, the only thing you need to do is just to buy new parts. The other side of this is to take your laptop to a repair shop to be fixed. Those people treat you just like a mechanic would, if you took your car to their shop. You will be informed about all the other problems “found”. Why bother?

There are many ways by which laptop repair may be accomplished. In fact, the alternatives that you have are quite a good. For your laptop repair needs you may go to an established service center. There are, however, certain disadvantages with using a service center to fix your laptop. Aside from these service centers, you may directly go to your laptop manufacturer, especially, if it has an office in the place where you live. Under certain circumstances, this alternative is the most cost-efficient since you do not have to spend money for the laptop repair. However, this is normally only possible if your laptop is still under warranty. Otherwise, the cost of repairing your laptop computer including the parts that may be needed will be charged to you. Moreover, you may go to Google, Yahoo, or Bing, and type in “laptop repair” to look for these individual service providers. It is possible that you will be able to find a professional who does laptop repair at an affordable price.
